Dying 2b Drunk

Organised by: St Johns School Marlborough

Press Release from St John's School Marlborough

Thanks to a grant from Wiltshire Crimebeat, students from Year 8 at St John’s School in Marlborough were lucky enough to watch a dance production of ‘Dyin 2 b Drunk’ last week, a show that is currently on tour across England. Dyin 2 b Drunk is a dance theatre production for teenagers, designed and written with one purpose: to highlight the dangerous consequences of drinking too much alcohol. Through hip hop and contemporary dance the 12 & 13-year olds were shown the dangers and consequences of binge drinking. The show was performed by dance company Pretty Good Girl and directed by Lou Barrett.

The High Sheriff of Wiltshire Mrs Madeline Wilks attended the performance at the St John’s Lower School in Marlborough and had a chance to talk to some of the students in the audience.
“We really enjoyed the dancing, especially the break dancing. It was really dramatic when Amy committed suicide – it has really made us think and shown us what can happen if you drink too much.” said students Adam and Matt. Some of the students also took part in workshops after the show that focused on dealing with peer pressure.

The show takes us into the world of Amy – a bright and educated teenager, who longs to fit in. All the girls are drinking, so there it is – the way in to being cool - getting drunk.
“The show was immensely powerful and has generated much discussion about peer pressure and the risks of excessive drinking amongst our students. I’m sure it is a show that the students will not forget in a hurry” said Karen Davis, Extended Schools Coordinator for St John’s.

The High Sheriff Mrs Wilks is raising funds for Crimebeat throughout the year. Wiltshire Crimebeat awards grants to young peoples’ projects throughout the county that are finding ways to tackle youth crime, bullying and anti-social behaviour.
